Check the Counterpoint to Build Confidence
It’s true. For every point, there’s a counterpoint. And, many times looking at something from both points - typically extremes - allows you to arrive in the middle, in a place and space of common ground and peace. And it’s from this space that you build confidence to try new things, take chances and simply go for it!
Take this same approach when you’re considering the “points” you make to yourself every day - the things you tell yourself every day. Any of these self-doubt-drivers sound familiar?
“I can’t do this, I’m not good enough.”
I already know it’s not going to work out.”
Things are either right or wrong, good or bad.”
I feel like I’m never going to get this right, I should stop trying.”
These are very common themes my clients share with me all the time. Know what I ask them? “What’s the exact opposite of that?” This forces them to pause and consider the counter point.
With that in mind, let’s revisit those “points” above:
“I can’t do this, I’m not good enough.” BECOMES “I have these three skills that could apply here. I CAN do this!”
I already know it’s not going to work out.” BECOMES “Well, I’m not 100% sure - I’ve never tried it.”
Things are either right or wrong, good or bad.” BECOMES “Well, there might be other possibilities…”
I feel like I’m never going to get this right, I should stop trying.” BECOMES “Well I was able to do something like this before. And here’s what I KNOW to be true.”
Counterpoints always open up possibilities, show us alternatives and create space for us to explore options. THIS is what puts us in the driver’s seat EVERY SINGLE TIME. And THIS is what drives the confidence required to try new things, take a chance and go for it!
